The Coptic Encyclopedia
Aziz Suryal Atiya
The Coptic Encyclopedia is an eight-volume work covering the history, theology, language, art, architecture, archaeology and hagiography of Coptic Egypt. The encyclopedia was written by over 250 Western and Egyptian contributing experts in the field of Coptology, history, art and theology and was edited by Aziz Suryal Atiya. It was funded by Coptic Pope Shenouda III, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and others.
The Coptic Encyclopedia is the first Encyclopedia to focus on one of the Oriental Churches and since its publication in 1991 it has been used by many scholars and students in the West. TheEncyclopedia is the fruit of the Coptic emigrant community in the West and the crown of the work of Dr. Aziz Suryal Atiya (1898-1988) who, unfortunately, did not see his work carried into print.
Dr. Atiya developed the vision to publish an encyclopedia during the years he taught at the Middle East Center of the University of Utah. He formed an editorial committee and scholars from all over the world were asked to contribute. Suggestions for entries were given. The work started in 1980. Contributors included many non-Orthodox scholars, including Muslims as Dr. Mustafa el-Fiqi and Dr. Ali el-Hillal Dessouki.
The Coptic community in the West played a role in increasing Western interest in Egyptian church life. If the interest in a Coptic Encyclopedia in English had not existed and if the project of theCoptic Encyclopedia had not received support in the Coptic migrant community in North America, the idea of producing an English Coptic Encyclopedia would have never materialized. The production of this Encyclopedia is therefore strongly linked to the growth of the Coptic migrant community in the West.
It is significant that Coptic Orthodox Church leader Pope Shenouda III himself contributed to the entry about emigration. In no period of Coptic history have as many Copts migrated to the west as during the Papacy of Pope Shenouda.
In 2009 the Claremont Graduate University (CGU) School of Religion acquired the right to develop an updated and continuously expanding and evolving web-based version of the Coptic Encyclopedia.
الموسوعه القبطيه صدرت الموسوعه دى سنة 1991 في تمن مجلدات فيها 2372 صفحه ، أصدرها و رأس تحريرها المؤرخ المصرى عزيز سوريال عطيه بالتعاون مع علما القبطولوجيا و غيرهم من المصريين و الغربيين. صدرت الموسوعه بالانجليزى عن الناشر ماكميلان فى نيويورك.
بيرجع الفضل في صدور الموسوعه القبطيه لعالمة الاثار القبطيه ماريان روبرتسون من جامعة يوتا اللى كان بيدرس فيها عزيز سوريال عطيه ، و اصدار الموسوعه كان حلم للمؤرخ عزيز سوريال عطيه من وقت ما كان بيدرس فى مركز دراسات الشرق الاوسط فى جامعة يوتا ، و هو اللى نظم عملية كتابتها ، و جمع كتابها من سنة 1980 ، بس للأسف اتوفى سنة 1988 قبل ما تطبع. و مولتها جهات كتيره كان منها البابا شنوده التالت المعروف بثقافته و حبه للتاريخ.
الموسوعه القبطيه هى اول موسوعه تتنشر عن الثقافه القبطيه و بتعتبر مرجع مهم للباحثين المصريين و الغربيين و بتغطى مواضيع كتيره عن الفتره القبطيه فى تاريخ مصر بما فيها اللغه القبطيه و الدين و الفن و المجتمع و السياسه.
السبع اجزاء الاولانيه من الموسوعه فيها اكتر من 2500 مقاله كتبها 215 باحث بطريقه الفاباتيه و بلغه سهله و مفهومه من غير تعقيدات لغويه و فيها صور و رسومات توضيحيه بالذات فى المواضيع اللى بتتكلم عن العماره و الفنون. الجزء التامن و الاخير فيه خرايط و فهرست للمقالات و اسامى الاماكن و الاشخاص الموجوده فى السبع تجزاء.
شارك فى كتابة الموسوعه اكتر من 250 مؤرخ و عالم اثار و لاهوتى و خبير فنى من مصر و الغرب ، منهم الأنبا غوريغوريوس و الأنبا باسيليوس الرابع ويونان لبيب رزق و الدكتور مصطفى الفقى و سمير خليل و الدكتور على هلال و صبحي لبيب و مريت بطرس غالى و لبيب حبشى و مجدى وهبه وأنور لوقا و وليم ادافر و بيير دي بورجيه و بيتر جروسمان وغيرهم.
